Information
Dwight DeJong, Director of the Flight Simulation Lab, introduces students to fixed-wing flight operations through four, (2) hour labs. Six simulators are utilized to expose students to a variety of learning objectives covering Ground Operations, Take-off and Departure Procedures, Basic Aircraft Handling, Navigation, Aircraft Stall and Recovery, Landing Techniques and Procedures, and Checklist Utilization. The lab culminates with a practical, operational application where the students get exposure to the completion of a Flight Test Mission with data gathering. They analyze the successes and failures of the mission and discuss their role as an engineer to determine the genesis of the potential failures or poor data results and solutions to overcome the shortfalls.
After graduating from Iowa State in 1991 from the Industrial Technology program, Dwight worked as the Facility and Environmental Engineer for Frigidaire Corporation. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1994 and after 20+ years of service, retired as a Lieutenant Colonel with 2000+ hours flying AV-8B Harriers and 1000+ hours in the twin engine turbo prop KingAir 250. Seven years of Dwight’s military career where heavily involved with the Test and Evaluation in the design and development of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter as well as the stand-up of the first Operational Squadron for the United States Marine Corps and Department of Defense–VMFA 121 in Yuma, AZ. He also serves as the F-35 simulation, subject matter expert for the Iowa Air National Guard at the Distributed Training Operations Center in Des Moines, IA.
