Doug Karlen

Doug Karlen is a Supervisory Soil Scientist and Research Leader with the USDA-Agricultural Research Service (ARS) at the National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment (NLAE) in Ames, IA. He also leads the ARS Renewable Energy Assessment Project (REAP), a multi-location team focused on sustainable harvest of crop residues. Doug has his B.S., M.S. and PhD. degrees from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Michigan State University, and Kansas State University, respectively. His soil management research involves a systems approach with a core focus on nutrient management. He is author or co-author for more than 300 refereed journal articles, proceedings papers, book chapters, and non-technical publications. Doug is a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy (ASA), Crop Science Society of America (CSSA), Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) and Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) and currently serves as Secretary General for the International Soil and Tillage Research Organization (ISTRO). He is also an adjunct faculty member in the Agronomy Department at Iowa State University and with Clemson University’s Soil, Crop, and Entomology Department.
