COE Internal Funding Opportunity: Enhance a (re)submission of a proposal

Opportunity Overview

This funding opportunity is designed to support researchers in improving and resubmitting a previously reviewed, but unfunded white paper, pre-proposal or proposal. The goal is to address specific weaknesses or deficiencies identified in the review, thereby increasing the likelihood of securing external funding in the next cycle.

Eligibility

  • An external (pre)-proposal or white paper must have been submitted and reviewed favorably but not funded.
  • Review comments identifying specific weaknesses or deficiencies must be available and that they can be addressed through some additional work.
  • The proposal resubmission target date must be within 0 to 3 months from applying for this funding.

Project Justification

Applicants must demonstrate that the proposal was well-received but lacked funding due to specific weaknesses. The proposed work should directly address these weaknesses to strengthen the revised submission.

Funding Justification

The requested support should be used for focused research efforts necessary to address the identified weaknesses. The proposed activities must be tied to the review comments and aimed at improving the proposal’s chances of funding.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following:

  1. Proposal Summary – A brief description of the original submission, including the funding agency, proposal title, and review outcome.
  2. Reviewer Comments – A summary of the key weaknesses or deficiencies identified in the review.
  3. Proposed Work Plan – A detailed description of the research activities to be performed to address the review comments, including:
    • Specific deficiencies being targeted
    • Methodology and approach to improve the proposal
    • Expected outcomes and improvements
    • Timeline for the resubmission of the proposal
  4. Impact Statement – A clear explanation of how the proposed work will enhance the likelihood of securing external funding.
  5. Budget Justification – A breakdown of the requested funding and how it will be allocated to support the necessary research.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on:

  • Specificity of Needs Addressed – How well the proposed work aligns with identified weaknesses in the review comments.
  • Methodology & Feasibility – The clarity and feasibility of the research plan, including methodology and execution.
  • Potential for Enhanced Funding Success – The degree to which the proposed activities will strengthen the revised submission and improve its likelihood of success.

Submission Deadline & Process

  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
  • Submit materials to COEfunding@iastate.edu
  • Awards will be announced as soon as the review is completed.

Final Report

  • A brief report must be submitted within three months of completion with the follow-on proposals’ details.
  • Submit the final report to COEfunding@iastate.edu
